The Photographic Exhibition on Art Deco Architectures will be held in Shanghai Deke Erh Art Center from December 9th -31st, 2006. All the photos, will be shown in the exhibition, are taken by Mr. Deke Erh, a famous photographer and collector of Shanghai.
During the inter-war years, Shanghai was known as the “Paris of the East”, and was the most flourishing metropolis in the Far East, boasting not only the center of business, but also the paradise of the hedonists.
As the most modern city in China, which participated in 1925 Paris Exposition, Shanghai with its rapid growing Capitalist economy and endless consumption enthusiasm responded to the spirit of Art Deco: luxuriant, radical and infinite progress. The name, Paris of the East, indicated the close relationship between Shanghai and Paris, but in this period it is American style not the French one that played a dominant influence on Shanghai’s Art Deco, especially in architectural and industrial designs. It meant that Art Deco represented the uprising of the new wealthy class and characteristic of modernity rather than the materialized symbol of colonial power to shanghai, a burgeoning oriental metropolis. Lifestyle of new age, concept of value, and modern consciousness, all of these implied by Art Deco, were extended rapidly to the daily life of the public, with the abundant commodities produced by industrial machines and extravagant settings created by Hollywood films.
As a famous researcher and collector on Art Deco for over 20 years, Mr. Deke Erh was invited by Miami Design Preservation league to pay a visit of photographic creation in Miami in September. And he will host a photography exhibition on the comparative development of Art Deco between Shanghai and Miami in Art Deco Weekend 2007. So “Shanghai Art Deco” will be the prelude to the series events related to Art Deco.
Sepia photos will make a presence at the upcoming exhibition of Art Deco.
There are series exhibitions on Shanghai Art Deco, such as Art Deco Furniture Exhibition, Art Deco Poster Exhibition and so on.
