King Albert Apartments

This apartment complex's name refers to its street address, the former Rue Roi Albert (now Shanxi Nan Lu) in the French Concession. There are sixteen four-story apartment houses, originsally containing two flats per floor, set amid winding paths and tasteful planting. They were especially popular with expatriate families with children. At the side and rear of the compound were individual garages for 85 cars cnow used as housing).

Except for greater occupancy density, these attractive apartment buildings are basically unchanged; they are easily identifiable with the architect's stylized sketch used in an earlier promotional brochure. The compound's gardens still serve as a playground for the residents'children.
