Also known as the Intersavin Society (I.S.S.) Apartments, this "flatiron" building could well be in Chicago-or Paris. Built by the French in 1924 on a grand scale, it featured large, angled apartments with interesting configurations that assured that no two apartments on the same floor were alike. With 76 apartments on six residential floors, it had a generous thirty servants’ quarters, a high ratio for that era. The building remains virtually unchanged, but currently houses 702 people, the servants’ rooms being fully utilized. Then as now the arcaded ground floor was occupied by shops. |
