The Shanghai Race Club

Standing at the western edge of the old race course (now People's Park and People's Square) this stately granite building with a tall clock tower was previously the clubhouse for various sporting organizations, the most prominent of which was the Shanghai Race Club. The grandstand still runs along the east side of the building, but under it today is storage for books, as the building now serves as the municipal library. From a reference room one can still look out over the huge oval that was the race course. All vestiges of its racing past are gone now, save for one lone spotter's box at the far turn, and the dramatic horses’ heads of iron which grace the stair rails in  the entrance hall.
