To
get to this country church one had to "cross the Rubicon". It lies
on the west side of the road by that name which once marked the far
western limit of urban Shanghai. Surrounded by a cemetery, the church
was used primarily for funeral services. The cemetery grounds are still
peaceful, as they serve as a nursery for baby animals of the Shanghai
Zoo. The church nave provides storage for their cages.
The
church was also designed by Ladislaus Hudec; radically
different from the more traditional Methodist Church, this Byzantine
roof is an expression of Hudec's flamboyant phase. Just outside the
wall is a small Gothic-style chapel, recently used for livestock. Both
buildings are in reasonably good shape and only await renovation. Lying
so far from downtown Shanghai, they may be spared the fate of some other
city-center churches: conversion into office or entertainment
facilities. |
