Shanghai Mansions
The Embankment House

Built by the Sassoons in 1932, this was the largest apartment house in Shanghai. It had 194 apartments and occupied a fourth of a mile of the street fronting on Soochow Creek. It had its own artesian well, which not only provided cool, pure drinking water for the residents, but also was used to fill its in-house swimming pool. The water was so cold that later a heater had to be installed to warm it so that the pool. could be used.
The Japanese occupied the building during World War II, and afterwards it served as the headquarters for UNHRRA and other allied relief and military organizations. It is still an apartment house today.
