The Palace Hotel
The Palace Hotel was built in 1906 by a British firm and is the oldest building on the Bund. It originally sported a fancy roofline, which burned out shortly after World War I. The fire may have started in the roof garden, where at one time one could eat and drink while watching the river traffic go by. Alas, this was the first and only rooftop facility of this ilk- perhaps because of the fire hazard.

Fortunately the hotel itself escaped most of the fire damage. These contemporary pictures reveal a lovely lobby with its original woodwork and marble in place.

The building is now the South Wing of the Peace Hotel-the old Cathay Hotel opposite, built long after it.
