![]() Completed only in 1948, the ground floor is occupied by shops, many surviving from that time. Its location at one of the French Concession's major intersections, Route de Sayzoong and Avenue Joffre (Changshu Lu and Huai Hai Lu), made this building a popular choice for those not owning cars. It was also in a particularly secure area, lying directly across from Poste Pottier, the French police station built in the style of a Marseilles villa. |

The
Savoy On the next corner of Route de Sayzoong was an even lovelier building, the Savoy Apartment House, built in 1928 by Rene Minutti, who also built the Picardie Apartment (now the Hengshan Hotel). Fortunately this building, with its lovely Art Deco plasterwork under the eaves and on the balconies, did not share the fate of the Picardie, which has been totally modernized with tiling and smoked glass. including the two storey servants quarters and garage behind it, the Savoy now is home to nearly five hundred tenants. |
