Art Deco (also called Tropical Deco) flowered in Miami Beach between 1935 and 1940. In only five years over 500 Art Deco structures were erected in one square mile. Deco¡¯s pared-down, streamline style was ideally suited to Florida¡¯s climate and its local building material (stucco). The style was also relatively inexpensive and offered a simple yet dramatic vehicle for showcasing Florida¡¯s vivid tropical colors in Futuristic lines -- designed to lure tourists from the cold, gray, industrial north.
Thanks to the efforts of a small group of determined preservationists, over half a century later these colorful buildings are saved, in all their splendor. They are a magnet for visitors from all over the world and also serve as settings for films and TV shows, and as background for glamorous advertising shoots.
