| The thirteen colleges and universities featured in this volume were founded in China by Protestant Christian bodies in North America and Great Britain, beginning around the middle of the nineteenth century. In some cases they grew to college-level through the amalgamation and evolution of smaller schools. The focus is on the architecture and campuses of these early colleges, twelve of which are now occupied by some of the most important institutions of higher education in China. |
